Somerset Sight is a Taunton based charity which reached it’s centenary year in 2019. The charity offers services across the county of Somerset to support people who are visually impaired. One of Somerset Sight’s services is it’s Volunteer Visiting Service within which local volunteers visit local people with sight impairment for company and support on an ongoing basis.

Somerset Sight is recruiting volunteers to visit people in their local area who have sight impairment. Sight loss greatly increases the chances of loneliness and isolation for people who are often elderly with other health conditions. The regular company of a local, trustworthy volunteer enhances people’s lives not only through the social contact but also help with other things such as paperwork, reading and correspondence. Many people also go out for exercise or trips out with their volunteers which helps them to feel less isolated and more part of their local communities.

Somerset Sight operates a clear and well structured recruitment process for it’s volunteers including an application form, DBS (police) checking and training. Volunteers also receive ongoing support from their volunteer co-ordinator and have the opportunity to attend regular local support meetings and make contact with other volunteers in their area.
